Intelligent use of technology will save the NHS

Julia Manning, founder and chief executive of independent think-tank 2020health, has emphasised the need for radical changes in the way we use technology as a means of driving innovation in the NHS.

According to Julia, technology has progressed considerably, particularly in the design and implementation of telehealthcare, but these deployments are relatively small-scale and exceptional examples of what the industry and clinicians have pioneered themselves.

Julia said: “Unless the NHS moves into the 21st century and transforms the way it delivers services, it will continue to fall below our expectations and leave sick people vulnerable. The government needs to set the framework, standards and payment systems, then our local NHS services need to work with industry to bring healthcare into the 21st century and in many cases, into the convenience of our homes.”

This ethos is a strong endorsement for Tunstall’s long-held belief that telehealthcare is an essential solution that could reduce costs, improve the quality of patient care and drive innovation and growth in the NHS.
